SLOVAK President Ivan Gašparovič will accept the post of honorary chairman of the Movement for Democracy (HZD) party, which he founded after leaving the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), the SITA news agency reported.
Gašparovič relinquished his party membership after winning the presidential elections in 2004.
The president is uncertain whether his honorary post can help the HZD in the upcoming general election campaign, and has rejected accusations that accepting the post would make him a partisan president.
"I'm not speaking about the party but about its programme. I will cooperate with any party that has the same programme as I do," Gašparovič told the news agency.
