Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič has the full support of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Fico said so during the political talk show Sobotné Dialógy, broadcast by the Slovak Radio (SRo) on April 27.
“For the first time there is an education minister who is not afraid of laying his head on the chunk, who for the first time named things how nobody in education had named before, and who is for the first time prepared for a broad dialogue with interested people,” Fico said, praising “his sedulity and will to show the Slovak public the state in which the Slovak education sector is”.
Čaplovič plans to meet with representatives from the Association of Towns and Villages in Slovakia (ZMOS), The Union of Towns of Slovakia, INEKO, Employment Institute, the Association of Mayors of Regional Capitals, Club 500, as well as school trade unionists and people from university and students’ associations on April 29 to discuss the situation in education and the report he recently submitted to parliament.
“We expect from the Monday meeting, as well as other similarly focused events, a general discussion over the report on the state of education sector, since this document reacts not only to the 20-year state in education, but also proposes measures toward its modernisation,” Education Ministry spokesperson Michal Kaliňák told the SITA newswire.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties said that they will meet with experts from the education sector on April 29 to discuss the possibility of dismissing Čaplovič from his post. They invited school trade unions, as well as representatives of minority education, the Slovak Chamber of Teachers, and representatives of religious and private schools to “discuss the other decisions”, MP for the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) Miroslav Beblavý told SITA.
