Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič will charge Prime Minister Iveta Radičová with the task of representing Slovakia at a forthcoming top-level eurozone summit, the Sme daily reported on Friday, October 21. Radičová’s government is being dismissed after a failed confidence vote in parliament on October 11, but should then be re-installed by Gašparovič in the same form after a revision is made to the constitution.
Nevertheless, the president insisted that he also has the authority to represent Slovakia at such events. Gašparovič said he did consider participating instead of Radičová. But "since the cabinet will continue I do not see any reason not to charge her," he said. The cabinet itself had already approved Radičová’s participation on Wednesday. The eurozone summit takes place in Brussels on October 23 and will focus on possible solutions to the current crisis, increases to the EFSF bailout mechanism and the recapitalisation of European banks.
