The number of passengers who used the services of state-owned railway company Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) last year declined by 5.5 percent year-on-year, but earnings went up by 6.86 percent, the TASR newswire was told by head of ZSSK's communications department Slavomíra Šubrtová on Tuesday, February 12. The overall number of passengers reached 43 million last year, while in 2011 the figure was 46 million.
"One of the significant changes that influenced the economic results was a change in ZSSK's tariff policy," said Šubrtová, adding that fares are now calculated per kilometre [not based on average tariffs]. Earnings reported by the company went up when compared to 2011 to reach €89.6 million. When it comes to predictions for this year, the company believes that the number of passengers will reach 43.6 million. According to Šubrtová, ZSSK is not planning any significant changes in its fares policy this year.
