Re: Slovakia Is Ready in New York, By Roma Press Agency, Nov 18-23, Vol 9 No 44

The concert [of Slovak classical music in Carnegie Hall in New York] was a smashing success. I had expected only ancient Slovak immigrants to be in the audience; instead, it was filled to capacity by a very chic international crowd.

The Slovak Roma quartet Anyalai Gypsy Band performed a very unusual interpretation of classical and Roma folklore melodies. It was fast and bold. They received a standing ovation. Then, it alternated between arias from well known operas performed by Ľubica Vargicová and piano pieces performed by Daniel Buranovský. The acoustics in Weill Recital Hall were exceptional; for a while, I was afraid Vargicová's voice would shatter the crystal chandeliers hanging over my head. Buranovsky performed Metamorphosis by Eugen Suchon (Slovak composer). After a call for an encore, this beautiful little girl (8-9years old) performed a duet with Vargicová. I was proud to have come from Slovakia after that performance.
