Re: Hungarian university to open in 2004, News briefs. March 17 - 23, Vol 9, No 10

Actually it hasn't taken such a long time. You must consider that Slovakia has existed as independent republic for only 10 years. From 1918 to 1993 Prague ruled. So I would say it is quite impressive to establish a Hungarian university in Slovakia after only 10 years of independence. I would also say that it is very generous and noble from the Slovak side, considering the mutual history of Slovaks and Hungarians especially the years of forced assimilation of the Slovak population when all Slovak schools were shut down. I must say that I doubt the foundation of this university is an economically sound decision, but maybe social and political consequences will offset this.

There is not much need for a Slovak university in Hungary nowadays due to the active assimilation process of the Slovak minority in Hungary orchestrated by previous governments of Hungary.
