I have recently returned to the UK after spending six weeks doing research in Slovakia. I am mixed race, Afro-Caribbean/English. I was sheepishly informed that the reason everyone was less than friendly towards me was that they thought I was a Roma. My mobile phone was stolen from me because the Roma who stole it thought I was a Roma.
I went to Slovakia with an open mind and came home thinking the Roma have to do more to shake off their image of shady, lazy dishonest thieves!
