AN INTERNATIONAL rescue team comprising 10 Slovaks, five Hungarians and one German surgeon, left for Sri Lanka January 6 to help with relief efforts following last week's devastating Indian Ocean earthquake and consequent tsunami.
The rescuers took around one tonne of disinfectants, medicines and water purifying equipment with them, according to the TASR news agency.
The Slovnaft oil refinery provided the team with Sk1 million (€ 26,000) to cover their expenses.
"Thanks to the donation, 15 rescuers are able to help with the disinfection of centres in Sri Lanka threatened with the spread of contagious diseases," said Ján Culka, chairman of the Central Rescue Service in Gabčíkovo.
