EIGHT historical personalities are to return – albeit symbolically - to Dolný Kubín. The town is building a Park of Activists, which should be completed by the beginning of summer, Dolný Kubín’s mayor, Ivan Budiak, told the SITA newswire.
The town has commissioned sculptor Rajmund Laur to portray the historical figures. The whole project is slated to cost about €29,000. The inhabitants of Dolný Kubín are proud of their natives and activists, who include Janko Matúška, author of the lyrics of the Slovak anthem, the greatest Slovak poet, Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, and a whole range of other outstanding personalities.
These figures, however, already enjoy recognition through statues, relillefs or commemorative boards.
The Park of Activists is intended to celebrate other personalities, SITA wrote. The exhibits will include a portrait of Ivan Ballo, the founder of Slovak professional music journalism and criticism; writer Martin Kukučín, one of the most outstanding representatives of Slovak realism in literature; Pavol Bujnák, a literary critic, historian, aesthete, linguist and translator; Theo H. Florin, a poet, editor and diplomat; Juraj Janoška, a writer, journalist, chairman of the cultural institution Matica Slovenská, and the first bishop of the protestant church in Slovakia; Ladislav Nádaši-Jégé, a local doctor, writer, and important Slovak historical novelist; Margita Figuli, a writer and translator, and the main representative of lyrical prose in Slovak literature; and Andrej Halaša, an editor, translator, ethnographer, theatre organiser and lawyer.
