Migration of Roma for economic reasons to European countries began in 1997 and has since complicated relations between Bratislava and the fifteen-member bloc.

The EU has urged Slovakia to improve conditions for Roma at home.

Slovakia has told the EU to tighten slack asylum laws and thus remove one of the main motivations for the exodus.
