Ľubor Benkovič and Jozef Boskovič, who as nominees of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), one of Slovakia’s four governing parties, sit on the supervisory boards of two major state-run firms, donated money to the party as founding members, not as sponsors, stressed SaS leader Richard Sulík on Wednesday, November 24, in response to a news conference by opposition leader Robert Fico.
“For me, a patron is someone who is not a member of the party or tries to look as if he had nothing to do with it, or gives it money in the hope of getting it back in [the form of] state contracts,” Sulík added, as reported by the SITA newswire.
His comments came in response to statements by the chairman of the opposition Smer party, Robert Fico, who said on Tuesday that SaS appointment of Benkovič and Boskovič to the companies was an example of partisan cronyism, as both men provided financial support to SaS before the June general election. Sme reported on Monday that Fico had called on the prime minister to dismiss the pair from their posts.
