Slovak President Rudolf Schuster today meets US President George Bush in a short Oval Office reception. One of the main topics of conversation will be the likelihood that former leader Vladimír Mečiar returns to power after fall elections. The US has made clear that a return of Mečiar would spoil Slovakia’s chances of receiving an invitation to join Nato this November at an expansion summit in Prague.
Schuster will be accompanied by Defence Minister Jozef Stank, Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, and Deputy PM for Human Rights and Minorities Pál Csáky, a Hungarian member of cabinet who was invited to attend by the US side. Bush will be flanked by Secretary of State Colin Powell, NSA advisor Condoleeza Rice, and Vice President Dick Cheney.
