The main opposition party, SDKÚ, presented a new name on its slate for the upcoming general election, with former state secretary of the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Ministry, Miroslav Beblavý, joining the party's list of candidates, the TASR newswire reported on February 12.
“He's a member of our political party, but he’s not in our top political structures,” said party chairman Mikuláš Dzurinda, adding that he will propose Beblavý's candidacy for the election.
“I may be good-looking, but first and foremost I want to bring new ideas. There are three topics that I’m interested in. They’re employment, education and the modernisation of Slovakia,” said Beblavý, adding that Slovakia is not in a good condition and changes are needed.
“The only way to secure change is to set up a government without the Smer party, because any government with Smer will be the same as today, with just minor cosmetic adjustments to the left or right,” said Beblavý. He added that he is retiring from the post of chairman of the managing board of the Slovak Governance Institute (SGI) as of Friday.
“I agreed on this with fellow members of SGI earlier this week. I'm going for the same move as when I was at the Labour Ministry, that is, I’ll remain an SGI member,” said Beblavý. According to Dzurinda, no more new candidates on SDKU's slate will be presented following recent announcements made concerning economist Eugen Jurzyca, former judge Jana Dubovcova and Beblavý. TASR
