THE RULING Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) is trying to have independent MPs enter its parliamentary caucus to secure a majority for the ruling coalition in parliament.

The SDKÚ already met with some of the independent MPs in Austria, discussing their possible joining with the party caucus, the Pravda daily wrote.

If six independent MPs entered the SDKÚ caucus, the party would have 28 MPs, the same as the original number of SDKÚ's legislators that they had at the end of last year before a group of MPs left the party to form the Free Forum.

So far, however, none of the independent MPs confirmed that they would join SDKÚ. The majority of the independent MPs are former members of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia.
