SDKÚ's Kukan the most popular presidential hopeful

FOREIGN Affairs Minister and Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) candidate Eduard Kukan has the greatest chance of winning the presidential elections scheduled for April, says the latest poll by the Slovak Radio's media research department.

With the support of 26.1 percent of those polled, Kukan outscored ex-premier and Movement for a Democratic Slovakia leader Vladimír Mečiar, who was favoured by 18.7 percent of the responses, according to the news wire SITA.

The third most popular candidate was incumbent Rudolf Schuster, backed by 15.9 percent. Ivan Gašparovič, head of the non-parliamentary Movement for Democracy, followed with 14.9 percent.

Martin Bútora, the Former Slovak Ambassador to the United States, has 6.4 percent, followed by Christian-Democratic Movement candidate František Mikloško with 6.3 percent.
