THE NATIONAL Security Office (NBÚ), which carries out security screenings for people who have access to confidential data, is reviewing some of its past decisions after it transpired that several former communist secret service (ŠtB) collaborators received the NBÚ's blessing in the past.
In the past, the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) stored the ŠtB files and so when screening people, the NBÚ would turn to the SIS for information on the given person's communist past, the SME daily wrote.
Now that the National Memory Institute has published the ŠtB files, the NBÚ can look into the files itself. The NBÚ discovered that at least in 20 past cases the SIS provided wrong information to the office.
SIS spokesman Vladimír Šimko insisted, however, that the service responded in line with the law and the truth.
According to SME, even at the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry there are at least 15 former collaborators or former employees of the ŠtB. Some of them are in positions that entitle them to access classified information.
