The draft law on higher education that was discussed by parliament on May 10 is aimed at reducing the quality of higher education in Slovakia, said the opposition SKDÚ party.
According to SDKÚ chairman Mikuláš Dzurinda and MP Tatiana Rosová, the SKDÚ will not support the bill because it would limit academic freedom and introduce fees simply for their own sake.
The SKDÚ also claims that the law will turn academic senates into discussion clubs without any powers, while the status of research universities will be scrapped.
According to Dzurinda, the "socialist government" is introducing fees in an anti-social and insensitive way without offering student loans or scholarships instead.
