An amendment to the law on state holidays approved by parliament on Tuesday, October 26, means that Slovakia will get two new memorial days next year: August 10 will be commemorated as the Day of Mining Disaster Victims, and May 1 as the Day of Slovak Accession to the EU.
The Day of Mining Disaster Victims was a proposal by opposition deputy Vladimír Jánoš (Smer), the SITA newswire wrote. A group of Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) MPs proposed celebrating the Day of Slovak Accession to the EU, claiming that none of the current memorial days celebrates Europe and the European space.
Memorial days in Slovakia do not constitute public holidays, but May 1 is already a public holiday.
