The amended Labour Code that came into effect on September 1 makes laying off employees more effective and simpler, the Sme daily wrote on Friday, September 2.
The Labour Ministry led by Jozef Mihál (Freedom and Solidarity (SaS)) says that the cancellation of the requirement to provide both a notice period and severance pay to laid-off employees will motivate companies to create more jobs. Trade unions, however, oppose the measure, which was one of the changes to the labour law most sought by companies.
An employee who is laid off will also now be entitled to less severance pay from his or her employee than before. The new Labour Code also implements a longer probation period for new employees, while a work contract for a specific period of time can now last for as long as three years. Trade unions plan to contest the amendment to the Labour Code at the Constitutional Court.
