Portuguese ex-prime minister António Guterres won also the fifth unofficial vote of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) on June 26. Former Serbian foreign affairs ex-minister Vuk Jeremić finished second followed by the Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák, the TASR newswire reported.
Guterres gained 12 positive and two negative voices. Jeremić and Lajčák won the same number of positive voices, eight. But Jeremić won by one negative voice less, six, a source from UN informed the TASR newswire.
Monday’s voting confirmed, according to the source from the UN, that Guterres leads the charts but also that countries do not care much about the principle of regional rotations.
“It has been confirmed that the title of eastern European countries [of the post] has not been followed,” the source told TASR, adding that fluctuation of votes has been confirmed too.
For Lajčák it is positive that he still has been somewhere among the top rankings. The unidentified source also indicated that the US would veto him as Jeremić is one of the permanent members of the UN security council.
Monday’s vote of the Security Council of the United Nations was the last informal vote. The next vote will take place on October 5.
The new head of the UN will replace Ban Ki-moon, whose term will finish at the end of 2016.
