A SLOVAK contingent will for the first time join the EU peacekeeping operation, code-named Althea, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A 35-strong guard unit will add to four Slovak officers already serving at mission headquarters in Sarajevo.
Operation ALTHEA is the first mission of its kind commanded by the European Union. Already 6,300 peacekeepers from 33 countries have been deployed in ALTHEA, the SITA news wire wrote.
Slovak peacekeepers in Kosovo are preparing for their eighth rotation. Since 2002, a hundred Slovak soldiers have been operating in Kosovo as part of the multinational brigade Stred under NATO command.
In January a 35-member platoon of logistics support should join them. Fresh forces for the Balkans are leaving this month, the Slovak Defence Ministry announced.
