Slovakia and Norway have signed an agreement on the European Economic Area Financial mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism as part of the ongoing visit of the king and queen of Norway. The agreement designates €80.75 million that will flow as grant aid to Slovakia between 2009 and 2014.
The funds are primarily devoted to flood prevention, the fight against climate change, and carbon capture and storage. Other priorities include: reduction of domestic violence; strengthening of civil society; improvement of social dialogue; scholarships; and cross-border cooperation. The memoranda of cooperation that define the grants' priorities for 2009-2014 were signed by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store. In addition to the Kingdom of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are also donors to the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism, which will provide €38.35 million to Slovakia. The Norwegian Financial Mechanism will contribute a further €42.4 million, the SITA newswire wrote.
