According to a survey by the Statistical Office, a record 17% of Slovak consumers in October said they intended to make a major purchase within a year, despite the fact that over two thirds of people feel the economy has worsened in the past 12 months. Tomáš Kmeť, an analyst with bank Slovenská sporiteľňa, said he did not understand why consumer confidence appeared not to have been harmed by widespread economic pessimism, or indeed why Slovaks remained pessimistic despite improving real wage and economic growth figures.
