A Czech Interior Ministry official has that Slovaks wishing to work or study in the Czech Republic would in future likely need a visa.
The Slovak Foreign Ministry said the measure would probably be bilateral.
The move, both countries said, was not a sign of cooling relations but of demands for border tightening from the European Union.
Both states are hoping to join the EU in 2004.
