A GROUP of Slovak military engineers deployed in Al Hillah, Iraq, will examine new minefields in the next few days, said Anton Filo, the spokesman of the Slovak contingent in Iraq.
According to the private news agency SITA, the commanding general of the multinational division that contains the Slovak engineers, Major General Mieczyslaw Bienek, announced that it is currently important to set priorities for mine clearing and to select the locations that are most important for the operations of coalition forces.
The commander of the Slovak unit, Karol Navrátil, informed General Bienek on April 26 of the unit's mine-clearing accomplishments. The second rotation of the Slovak military engineers has cleared 9,600 square metres of minefields manually and 1,400 square metres using the mine-clearing vehicle Božena. They have found and de-activated 121 antitank land mines.
Slovakia has deployed approximately 100 military engineers in Iraq.
