SUPPORT for the ruling Smer party has been growing over the past two months.
More than 42 percent of respondents in a recent public opinion poll would have voted for Smer if parliamentary elections were held in early November, the Slovak Statistics Office's polling institute announced on November 16. That was an increase of 1.2 percentage points from October.
The popularity of the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) is also on the rise. It finished second with the support of 15.6 percent of voters, up 1.1 percentage points over the month.
The junior coalition party Slovak National Party (SNS) came in third with 11.6 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the month. It was followed by the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) with 8.7 percent, up 1.5 percentage points.
On the other side, the third ruling coalition party, Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), is losing ground. It finished with 8.6 percent, a drop in support of 3.3 percentage points. The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) also finished with 8.6, a drop of 1.2 percentage points.
The Statistics Office conducted the survey between November 1 and 9 on a sample of 1,113 respondents.
