Ján Slota, the chairman of the ruling coalition’s Slovak National Party (SNS), met on September 6 with Foreign Minister Ján Kubiš, who called the meeting to inform Slota of the ministry's official stance toward the recent establishment of the extremist paramilitary group Magyar Garda ("Hungarian Guard") in Hungary, and of the steps the ministry intends to take in response.
Slota was satisfied that the ministry reacted promptly to the situation. However, he said that Hungarian PM Ferenc Gyurcsany only condemned the organisation formally. He also criticized Hungarian President László Solyom, who recently celebrated Hungary’s national holiday in Slovakia.
The SNS, said Slota, had expected that the recent forum of 14 Hungarian organizations from all over the world in Štúrovo would have condemned the group. However, he said, as they all completely ignored the issue, their attitude means they support the organization.
