Eduard Markovič has been removed as the head of the Slovak National Party (SNS) in Prešov Region, the Nový Čas daily wrote on July 13.

Two days earlier, the daily wrote that Markovič was chosen as a candidate for Prešov regional governor by the SNS regional council and that the party leadership had proposed as its own candidate Miroslav Škvarek, the mayor of the town of Svit.

After the SNS party representatives from Prešov wrote a letter to the Interior Ministry noting their suspicion of the leadership’s possible violation of SNS statutes, SNS chairman Andrej Danko recalled Markovič from his post.

Markovič told Nový Čas that he has not yet received an official decree, but he said that the Prešov Region’s first vice-chair Milan Ďurica, the regional vice-chair Patrik Františka and the Svidník district chairperson Anna Oberstová were also recalled.

Markovič told the daily that the reason may be that different candidates were chosen for Prešov governor at the regional party council in Levoča, adding that all party members must accept without question what the chairman says.
