Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, while meeting his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico on January 14, congratulated the country on its economic growth in the face of the severe global economic crisis, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovakia has seen its economy grow in recent months and it is expected to grow still further, said Zapatero, who had a one-day visit to the country as part of his tour of the entire European Union at the start of his country's presidency.
Zapatero pledged support for Fico's plea that Spain pay more attention to energy security and help build energy links during its half-year presidency, TASR wrote. Fico stressed that Slovakia fully supports all the priorities set out by Spain for the EU and commended Spain for promoting social aspects in the fight against the crisis and he proposed enhancing cooperation in this sphere with his fellow Social Democratic prime minister.
