THE NUMBER of Slovaks who intend to vote in the May 16-17 referendum on Slovakia's entry to the European Union fell in March by 5 percentage points compared to February to 66.9 per cent, the Statistics Office's ÚVVM agency reported March 21.
Of those who intend to vote, 72.2 per cent support accession, compared to 70.5 per cent from the previous month, while 18.8 per cent oppose it.
Among the other findings, 18.5 per cent of respondents said they would not take part in the referendum, and 14.6 per cent were undecided. The poll showed that citizens are better informed on the referendum date than they were in February. Last month, around 26 per cent said they did not know anything about the referendum, while at the beginning of March only 15 per cent knew nothing about it.
Slovakia and nine other countries are expected to join the EU on May 1, 2004.
