Slovakia has sent a fourth humanitarian package worth €70,000 to Syrian refugees who currently live in Jordan. Together with Austria it became the first country to respond to the call of the European Commission to assist the people who fled the combat-stricken Syria, the TASR newswire reported on September 28.
The first three aid packages, addressed to the Turkish government, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), accounted for a total of €70,000. The last package will be sent to Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, which will then distribute it among people living in the Za’Atri refugee camp, TASR wrote.
The UNHCR on September 27 warned that the number of people fleeing Syria could rise to 700,000 by the end of this year. According to the latest estimates, as many as 294,000 Syrian citizens have arrived in the neighbouring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The UN has stated that it needs $488 million from international donors for the refugees.
