Mikuláš Vareha, a colourful businessman sometimes dubbed 'The King of Zemplín' (a region of eastern Slovakia), fraudulently caused losses for the state estimated at €58.1 million, according to the Special Department of the Prosecutor General's Office, the Sme daily wrote on Friday, August 3.
The police have already charged Vareha with tax fraud. The investigation file contains 58 pages, while the lawsuit has 16 pages. Prosecutor Ján Šanta said that this is the first "record case" in his career. Between 2008 and 2011, the businessman represented 11 companies which traded with each other and, according to the investigators, thereby defrauded the state. If found guilty, Vareha could spend up to 16 years in prison.
