The market situation for Slovakia's biggest private employer, U.S. Steel Košice (USSK), has been improving and the company may be able to resume normal operations, Hospodárske Noviny reported on January 12, writing that the company may be able to cancel the crisis regime it announced in December.
The steel producer had announced that due to lack of orders it planned to work only four days a week for three months. Hospodárske Noviny reported that this may now change in February.
The company’s spokesman, Ján Bača, said if the company returns to standard operations it will first inform its employees. The head of the KOVO trade union, Mikuláš Hintoš, told Hospodárske Noviny that the agreement on shorter working hours will be re-evaluated by the end of January.
USSK employees are receiving 60 percent of their pay on days when they stay at home.
