Violence against women widespread

NEARLY 20 per cent of Slovak women have experienced violence from their partners, a recent study showed.

According to Focus agency research carried out for the Bratislava-based International Centre for Family Studies, the most frequent forms of violence against women are various threats and verbal abuse.

The most common forms of physical violence include slapping and pushing. As many as half of all Slovak women who experienced violence from their partners have been forced to have sexual intercourse and been beaten, the research showed.

Of women who have violent partners, one third said they had been threatened with a gun, beaten, raped, and strangled.
