On March 7, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily wrote that the effort of the new EU members to get into the US Visa Waiver Program is entering a new round. Brussels entered the process recently and wants to negotiate with Washington on behalf of the entire European Union.
The marathon of negotiations began in Brussels during a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice when she held talks with EU High Representative Javier Solana and External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner. Keith Hughes, spokesman for the US Embassy in Bratislava, told the daily that the position of Slovakia is somewhat simpler because it does not need to solve the sensitive question of armed marshals on board airplanes to the US because there are no direct flights between the countries.
