THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court has issued a second ruling confirming that the personal rights of Volodymyr Yegorov, charged with several murders, were violated during the proceedings held in Slovak courts. The court, however, has not granted him financial compensation, the TASR newswire reported on April 15.
Yegorov, considered to be the head of an organised crime group since the late 1990s, has also filed a complaint over the violation of his rights with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which received it in September 2013. He objects to his detention in the years 2010 and 2012, the length of his detainment and also the legality of proceeding over his complaint on the decision to take him into custody that was issued in July 2010, Marica Pirošíková, a representative of Slovakia at the ECHR, told TASR.
The government has already commented on the complaint. The court will now call on Yegorov to comment on the government’s statement and specify his requirements for compensation, Pirošíková added.
Yegorov has been prosecuted in various cases. The criminal organisation allegedly operated in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine and Belarus, and was involved with leasing and insurance fraud and car theft.
Yegorov has been in custody since 2002. He was released last September based on the ruling of the Constitutional Court and subsequently deported to Ukraine.
