THE TOWN of Zvolen on October 19 welcomed Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq, a shaman, from the Kalaallit nation in Western Greenland and the official representative of Arctic peoples at the United Nations.
“Angaangaq is an elder, healer, carrier of wisdom, shaman and storyteller respected not only within his own community but also internationally,” Ján Markoš of the Živica civil association told the TASR newswire. “He’s been summoned by his people to bring the sacred fire home. He first lit the flame at the ancient sacred ‘Top of the World’, and now he’s lighting it in the hearts of people all over the world – by means of stories and songs and through the sound of his wind-drum, he creates a circle of power, beauty and healing whereby he melts the ice in the hearts of those taking part [in his meetings],” Markoš explained.
He further said that the UN representative also gave a lecture at Zvolen’s Technical University on October 21. Among his other activities, Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq is a permanent delegate of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Permanent Forum of Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).
Angaangaq debated with the public on October 19, at the SNP Square in Zvolen.
