House UNESCO, an information centre with exhibition, was symbolically opened in the year Vlkolínec celebrates the 25th anniversary of its addition to UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The newly built House UNESCO is located in a folk architecture conversation area on the site where an historic wooden house burnt to ashes during the Slovak National Uprising. Tourists may visit it year-round.
The Director of the Andrej Hlinka (KDAH) Cultural House in Ružomberok, Ján Pavlík, said that tourists to the UNESCO house will have the opportunity to learn everything related to Vlkolínec.
“They can also buy souvenirs so that they have a material memory as well as an experience,” he said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that there will be more services provided, step by step.
Almost 100,000 tourists per year visit Vlkolínec, mainly from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, but also from Japan, Israel, Canada and New Zealand.
“It is a big rarity for them to see such an old village that is still alive,” said Katarína Šarafínová, director of the Regional Organization of Tourism, Liptov, as quoted by TASR.
Workers at the UNESCO House will also guide visitors around the village, speaking about the history of Vlkolínec.
