The path in the recreational zone of Kamenný Mlyn (Stone Mill) Trnava has been turned into an education trail, the first of its type in Slovakia. Credit goes to the municipality that cooperates with the Pedagogical Faculty of Trnava University.

Six informative boards lead visitors through an ecosystem of bottomland forests, wetlands and meadows. Species of local plants and animals are displayed in a so-called phenological calendar, which demonstrates their occurrence in various seasons.

Kamenný Mlyn is a part of the Chránený areál Trnavské rybníky (the Trnavské Ponds Protected Area) and it is located in third degree nature protection. The ponds are in the fourth degree area, while the fifth degree is the highest one.

“Visitors often do not know how important it is to maintain the balance among the living and nonliving parts of ecosystems and why human activity may destroy them,” wrote the municipality on its website, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

The bottomland forest is mainly endangered, which has survived in Kamenný Mlyn to this day, the municipality added.

With a bit of luck, visitors may also see the living parts of the ecosystem, animals and insects. Watching water animals and birds is easier at the wooden wharves, a new feature of the ponds since spring.
