President Ivan Gašparovič on Wednesday, November 9, approved the cancellation of the licence (concessionary) fees paid by the public to fund public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS).
After the fees end, as of 2013, RTVS will be funded solely from the state budget, each year receiving 0.142 percent of the national GDP, using the previous full year’s figure as the basis for setting its budget. This means that RTVS in 2012 would receive €93.8 million, an amount calculated based on Slovakia’s GDP in 2010, the TASR newswire wrote. The law on RTVS requires the state to pay the broadcaster a minimum of €90 million a year.
