PHILANTHROPIST Andrej Kiska would be the only presidential candidate to have the chance to defeat Robert Fico in the second round run-off of the presidential election, a recent poll carried out by the Focus polling agency on 1,051 respondents showed.
Prime Minister Robert Fico would win the first round with 38 percent of the vote, followed by Kiska with 17.3 percent, and Radoslav Procházka with 10.8 percent of the vote, the Sme.sk website reported on February 11.
Velvet Revolution leader and actor Milan Kňažko would place fourth with 9.5 percent, followed by Pavol Hrušovský from the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 9.3 percent, Gyula Bárdos of the Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) with 5.6 percent, former KDH chair Ján Čarnogurský with 3.7 percent, Helena Mezenská of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) with 2.5 percent and cardio-surgeon Viliam Fischer with 1.2 percent. Other candidates would receive less than 1 percent of the vote.
According to the poll, 64.4 percent of voters would participate in the elections, while 18.9 percent said they would not.
Regarding the second round run-off, the poll showed that Kiska would win with 53.7 percent of the vote, defeating Fico, who would gain only 46.3 percent. Other candidates would lose: Procházka would get 47.7 percent compared to Fico’s 52.3 percent, Kňažko 41.9 percent to Fico’s 58.1 percent and Hrušovský 41.4 percent to Fico’s 58.6 percent, Sme.sk wrote.
The Focus poll is one of the last that will be published before the first round of the presidential elections, scheduled for March 15. All polls but one show Fico and Kiska making it to the second round. The MVK poll had Procházka winning13.6 percent in the first round, with Kiska garnering 13.2 percent.
