Soaring popularity

THE TIME when Slovaks could travel from Bratislava's M R Štefánik airport only to the Czech capital of Prague or to the eastern Slovak city of Košice is over. Almost every year, the airport welcomes a new air carrier and announces new destinations.Recent numbers of transported passengers and cargo show that Bratislava airport's efficiency increases every year. In 2003, 480,000 passengers travelled through M R Štefánik.

Diplomats need to eat too

SHARING traditional dishes, the foods that come from our hometowns, regions, or countries, is a way of sharing ourselves. I have been to countless potluck dinners where each of us brought something special - something made the way we made it at home. And those were some of the best evenings I have ever spent. The food was not only delicious, but it was a conversation starter: "How did you make this?", "Where did you get this ingredient?", "Can I have the recipe?"

What keeps EP interest low

THE EUROPEAN Parliament's (EP) inability to live up to handling the everyday problems of Europeans destines the June elections for low turnout across the continent. Slovakia can hardly be expected to be among the better-performing countries. The new parliament, which will serve until 2009, will be elected in all 25 member countries between June 10 and 13. Voter turnout has dropped since the first direct elections took place in 1979.That first vote was attended by over 65 percent of eligible citizens in the nine countries that then held elections. By 1999 that figure was down to 52.9 percent. In the United Kingdom, only 24 percent of voters used their right five years ago.

Slovaks campaign-weary

IT WOULD be good for Slovakia, immediately after its entry to the EU, to demonstrate that its citizens are interested in EU affairs and that they are sending their best representatives to Brussels, said Deputy Prime Minister Pál Csáky in an interview with The Slovak Spectator. The Slovak Spectator (TSS): The chairman of the Office of the European Parliament (EP) in Bratislava, Azelio Fulmini, expressed concerns about the potentially low turnout in the elections to the EP. Do you share his concerns? Do you think that citizens are aware of the importance of these elections?
