FOURTEEN Slovak designers, artists, and craftspeople whose works are regularly exhibited at the Centre of Folk Art Production (ÚĽUV) Design Studio in Bratislava, which specialises in presenting new approaches to traditional folk art, will be introduced to the Austrian public.
Mednyánszky - The European artist of Slovakia and Hungary
PAINTER Ladislav Mednyánszky was born in 1852 to an aristocratic family in Beckov, at that time a part of upper Hungary under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, today a town in the western corner of Slovakia. Neither obviously Slovak nor Hungarian, Mednyánszky's origin can be considered as European as his work.The two nations have recently had the chance to get to know the entire spectrum of his work.

ALTHOUGH Slovakia entered the European Union on May 1, the quality of life and the living standard are still far from those of the EU15, the countries that were already in the union prior to this year.Analysts predict that it might take Slovakia, along with other new member countries, more than 20 years to reach the "old EU" level.

Danube race joins two capitals
WELCOMING the enlargement of the European Union through sport is the idea behind a new event starting May 15 on the section of the Danube between Bratislava and Vienna.Eight-person rowing shells from surrounding countries will compete at the Ferdinand Martinengo Memorial, named after the founder of the first rowing club in Bratislava.
