Traditional design meets modern life
"USING steam for bending wood has been well-known since ancient times. Typical examples of traditional wood bending are the side of a boat, the handle of a walking cane, or parts of a stringed musical instrument," said Tibor Uhrín.The old technique has inspired the artist to create unique wooden bowls, the individual parts of which are stitched decoratively together.

THE LEADERS of the four ruling coalition parties have made a pact that none of them would team up with the opposition during parliamentary voting.Similar promises have been made in the past, but occasionally the temptation to push through special interest legislation has been stronger than loyalty to coalition partnership.According to Béla Bugár, the leader of the SMK, the outcome of the meeting was that everyone agreed to join forces to erase problematic relationships in parliament.

Ivaška sings for American audience
INTERNATIONALLY renowned singer Jozef Ivaška will perform in Maryland, USA, November 10. Helen Cincebeaux, editor of Morava Krasna and Slovakia, and Helen Zemek Baines will display antique folk dress from the Czech and Slovak Republics during the intermission and after the concert.Ivaška, a "man of a thousand songs", will sing in various musical styles, including opera, operetta, rock, pop, jazz, blues and folk.
Thorny road to Rome
TWENTY-FIVE European heads of government gathered in Italy last week to sign the first European constitution. However, the spectacular ceremony at Rome's Cappidoglio Palace was overshadowed by uncertainty over the constitution's eventual ratification by the various member-state governments.Not all EU nations are enthusiastic about the treaty. Nevertheless, European leaders were able to reach a consensus regarding the document following 28 months of protracted talks.
Artists donate works to Vukovar
OVER 20 artists from 11 countries dedicated works to a museum in Vukovar, which was destroyed in the Serbo-Croatian war, the daily Pravda wrote.Italian artist and curator Getulio Alviani collected the art works, which will be exhibited at the Milan Dobeš Museum in Bratislava, until the reconstruction of the Vukovar museum is finished. The exhibition, entitled 22 From the Future of Vukovar will run until January 20. The Milan Dobeš Museum is at Zámočnícka 13 and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.
Roma educate Roma
ROMA women in eastern Slovakia have for the past year been assisting doctors in a health project called Roma Women for Society. The project is ongoing in five Roma settlements in Slovakia - Sabinov, Stráne pod Tatrami, Výborná, Podhorany and Jurské - and there are plans for more.The women are working side by side with local doctors to educate their fellow Roma on matters of healthcare, sex education and hygiene.

US election night in Slovakia
SLOVAK Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda welcomed the re-election of George W. Bush as President of the United States, and congratulated the US Republican leader, saying that Bush's re-election was a "very good choice for Slovakia, Europe, and the world".George W. Bush won the US presidential election November 2 with a slim 51 percent majority, revealing that although he will stay in the White House another four years, the US is a deeply divided nation, with 49 percent of American voters strongly opposing Bush's domestic and foreign agenda.
