THE SLOVAK Philharmonic was filled with a special kind of sound last weekend as dozens of families turned out for the first in a series of Young People's Concerts. University ratings breed controversy
THE QUALITY of Slovak universities is low, claims the independent Academic Ranking and Rating Agency (ARRA) in its recent overall evaluation of public universities in this country. However, academics criticized the agency's comparative study as unreliable.
PMÚ confirms Sk885 million fine for Slovak Telecom
THE COUNCIL of the Slovak Antitrust Office (PMÚ) confirmed a record high Sk885 million (€23.5 million) fine for fixed-line operator Slovak Telecom (ST) for misusing its dominant market position, the Hospodárske noviny business daily wrote.

Culture gets a boost
THE CULTURE Ministry has allocated more money for grants in 2006 and made its system for getting a grant more transparent and faster. Applicants can request grants from a total allocation of Sk750 million (€20 million), which is a 50-percent increase from last year, and monitor their applications' progress on the Internet.
New political party on the horizon
A NEW political party is emerging on Slovakia's political horizon. Two members of PM Mikuláš Dzurinda's cabinet, Economy Minister Jirko Malchárek and Culture Minister František Tóth announced the formation of a new party, the daily SME reported.
