Publisher's letter on the 14th anniversary of The Slovak Spectator
IT WAS the media challenge of the decade for this newspaper’s four founders to establish The Slovak Spectator, Slovakia’s first English-language newspaper, back in 1995.At the time, the country was still only just appearing on maps of the world. During the same period, the country was treading a perilous path towards international isolation as a result of the controversial conduct of the former government of Vladimír Mečiar.
Tax office director accused of tax fraud
THE DIRECTOR of the Košice 4th District Tax Office, Ivo P., has been accused of tax fraud. He also faces several additional charges.
Bratislava among the richest
THE LATEST Eurostat survey shows that the Bratislava region is among the top twenty wealthiest regions in the European Union, as measured by GDP per inhabitant in 2006.
Orange moving away from Bratislava
PARTS of the call centre of mobile operator Orange, including the invoice, information centre and technical support departments, will move from Bratislava to Banská Bystrica, the Sme daily reported. Part of the company's services will remain in Bratislava.
Unions pledge restraint
TRADE unions that restrain from calls for pay hikes and strike pressures had seemed a dream unattainable for many governments and employers until not so long ago. The global economic downturn has not only brought national economies to their knees and upset labour markets but has also tamed Slovakia’s labour unions, which now pledge wide support for the measures passed by the government of Robert Fico to ease the impacts of the crisis and maintain employment.
Second pension pillar faces changes
THE PRIVATE pension system in Slovakia is facing another change. After the government's repeated reopening of the second, private pillar to allow participants to return freely to the state-administered pension system, the fees charged to participants by pension fund management companies are now in the spotlight. Prime Minister Robert Fico says they are too high and wants them cut and tied to the gains achieved on pension savings.
Carneval Slovakia welcomed 500 masks
A MARCH of carnival masks through the town centre and masks flown from heaven – or, at least, from the church tower in Mariánske Square – opened the 5th year of Carneval Slovakia Žilina on Friday, February 20, the TASR newswire reported.
Quality of education falls
THE SLOVAK university education system still faces several challenges in order to be able to fulfil the needs of the labour market, which has undergone restructuring in the past decade and is now competitive with its European counterparts, human resources experts say. The Slovak Spectator spoke to František Gahér, the rector of Comenius University (UK) in Bratislava, about this and also about the international competitiveness of Slovak universities, the importance of rankings and the links between academia and business.
Former mayor sentenced to 5 years
THE FORMER mayor of the Bratislava borough of Rača, Pavol Bielik, was re-sentenced to five years in prison on February 24.
Smoking half-banned
FROM early September restaurants in Slovakia should take on a different look, as the familiar smoky haze which currently pervades many of them begins to lift – at least partially. Under new rules approved by parliament, any restaurant that wishes to allow diners to smoke must confine them to an area at the back of the establishment separated by a wall from an area devoted to non-smoking customers.
