Agriculture department gets new chief
A WEEK after the Agriculture Minister Stanislav Becík submitted his resignation, upon which he agreed with his party boss Vladimír Mečiar, President Ivan Gašparovič accepted his resignation on September 16 and appointed Vladimír Chovan as the new minister.
Spreading the word through Slovak Studies
THE PRESERVATION of the language and culture of a nation abroad would be very difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts made in the area of education. It is for this reason that Centres of Slovak language and culture are significant players in the preservation of connections of Slovaks abroad to their native country, to promote the Slovak culture among the local population and to develop Slovak scholarships outside the country.
Economic Freedom Index down
SLOVAKIA's level of economic freedom has declined, moving the country down six places to rank 26th, according to the 2009 Economic Freedom of the World index drawn up by the Canada-based Fraser Institute, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovaks living abroad
SLOVAKS do not live only in Slovakia. It is estimated that along with about 5 million Slovaks living in their native country, there are over 2 million people living abroad who claim to be of Slovak origin or to have Slovak roots.
Slovak can be easy!
SLOVAK language teaching is supported by the Education Ministry at 25 universities abroad. Lecturers in Slovak language and culture work primarily in countries which have larger Slovak communities, for instance at universities in Budapest, Szeged, Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Bucharest, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Uzhgorod, according to the Report on State Policy on Slovaks Living Abroad, approved by the government on August 26, 2009.
Slovak festivities in Báčsky Petrovec
IN EARLY August the 48th traditional Slovak National Festivities took place in Báčsky Petrovec in Serbia. Slovakia’s deputy prime minister, Dušan Čaplovič, attended the festivities.
Slovaks linked to UK cash machine scam

OSCE envoy proffers 'advice' on language law
AN ADVISER rather than a mediator. This is how Knut Vollebaek, the High Commissioner on National Minorities for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), described his role in the ongoing dispute between Slovakia and Hungary concerning Slovakia’s amended State Language Act during his visit to Bratislava in mid-September.
Slota rips into Hungarians
WHILE the pictures broadcast from the meeting between the prime ministers of Slovakia and Hungary in Szécsény on September 10 showed an almost idyllic atmosphere, those who did not expect Slovak (or Hungarian) politicians to change their attitudes overnight were proved right in the days that followed.
Roman artefacts found at Bratislava Castle
BRATISLAVA Castle is currently undergoing renovation, and has been given new night-lighting and a new colour, the ČTK newswire wrote. But in addition, during works in August, archaeologists uncovered remnants of Roman buildings and Celtic coins that they say prove the present-day Slovak capital was in Roman times an important central-European Celtic power centre.
Ukraine train scanning resumes
ANOTHER chapter of the Slovak-Ukrainian scanner saga began on September 14 when Slovakia re-launched the operation of an x-ray device to monitor cargo trains coming from Ukraine at the Maťovce customs checkpoint.

The Double Life Is Twice As Good – Jonathan Ames
THE WORK of Jonathan Ames is among the ultimate guilty pleasures. His subject matter often veers deep into the underground—deviancy, alcoholism and perversion—yet the vigour and audacity of his writing elevates him close to high literature. Through three novels and three collections of newspaper columns, Ames has laid bare a soul full of contradictions: he is tortured, fallible and instinctively depraved, but also urbane and achingly affectionate.
Slovak bears to be counted
OWING to quarrels between environmentalists and forest keepers about the number of bears in Slovakia, the State Forest Protection (ŠOP) agency has begun preparations to count them and hopes to finance the project from European Union funds.
Climate change is not just 'environmental'
I REMEMBER in the 1980s as a callow teenager meeting the great French political scientist Raymond Aron. He talked to me about the danger in politics of „benign neglect“ - good intentions being obviated by lack of focus. That is the danger we face today on climate change.
Countrywide Events
Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava EXHIBITION: AS MANY as 35 artists, including both professionals and students from secondary schools and universities, have prepared a joint design exhibition in Bratislava focusing on the environment and recycling. Until October 11, visitors to the event will have the opportunity to admire various objects made from old electrical cables, empty bottles, pens, water pipes or clothes. Often surprisingly funny and unique, the resulting pieces examine the border between waste and art. Moreover, several lectures and film screenings are available as part of the project. Recycle, Repair, Respect is available at the Satelit Exhibition Hall at Dobrovičova 3 daily, except Mondays, from 13:00 to 18:00. There is no admission charge. Further details can be found at www.sdc.sk. Designer: Silvia Bárdová, STU Košice;

Jánošík
WHAT do foreigners imagine when they hear the word “Slovakia”? Most of them, nothing. The somewhat better-informed, a vampire-laden frozen tundra without flushing toilets somewhere in war-torn Yugoslavia. And hockey fans, that part of the former Czechoslovakia which now has the worse team.
A piece of Slovakia among the maple leaves
THOUGH many generations have come and gone since the first Slovaks landed on Canadian shores, the Slovak community in the world’s second biggest country, reinforced by several waves of immigration, has seemingly managed to preserve some of its most precious treasures.
