Becoming a certified Slovak
The status of ‘Slovak living abroad’ may be granted to Slovaks living outside of the country who do not have permanent residence in the Slovak Republic but have Slovak citizenship. Similarly, those who do not possess Slovak citizenship but maintain that they or their relatives are Slovak nationals can also be granted this status. From January 1, 2006 the document proving this is the Certificate of Slovak Living Abroad (Osvedčenie Slováka žijúceho v zahraničí) which replaced the previously issued Expatriate Card (Preukaz zahraničného Slováka).
Case not closed: medical report questioned
AN EVENT that some had hoped would bring long-awaited resolution to the case of Hedviga Malinová, the girl who was allegedly beaten up in an ethnically-motivated attack on the streets of Nitra three years ago – an event which became another milestone in the tortured history of Slovak-Hungarian relations – has turned out to be just another wasted chance. Even after the publication of an expert medical report, the question of who was the victim in this case remains unanswered.
Slovakia expresses outrage over Hungarian foreign minister’s statements
Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday, September 17, summoned Hungarian Ambassador to Slovakia Antal Heizer in order to convey Slovakia's outrage and Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák's personal annoyance over Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Balázs' statements to the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, ministry spokesman Peter Stano announced.
Supreme Court confirms Sendrei killing verdicts
A panel of judges of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic has rejected appeals submitted by the accused and the prosecution alike in the case of the Sendrei family, the SITA newswire wrote.
Fico: Press Code should be stricter because of lies in tabloids
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Thursday, September 17, that he is ready to initiate a tougher Press Code due to what he called the number of lies published mainly in the tabloid press.
Nováky chemicals firm employing 1,800 people files for bankruptcy
Chemicals company Novácke Chemické Závody (NCHZ), based in Nováky (Trenčín Region), has filed for bankruptcy and protection from its creditors at Trenčín District Court, court spokesman Roman Tarabus said on September 17.
€200 million earmarked for Roma minority projects up to 2013
Government Plenipotentiary for Roma Communities Ľudovít Galbavý has announced a corrected call to submit applications for provision of support for projects to help the Roma minority in Slovakia.

Slovak MPs refuse to abolish fines for State Language Act violations
Fines for violations of the State Language Act will not be abolished, as Slovak MPs rejected an amendment proposed by Most-Híd party MPs Zsolt Simon and Lészló Nagy to this effect at its first reading on Wednesday, September 16.
Slovak legislators Palko and Minárik see their anti-corruption bill defeated
Lawmakers on Wednesday, September 16, voted down a bill concerning the origins of property that would have required individuals and corporations to establish the origin of wealth that went beyond the limits of their known sources of income.
Vollebaek: Slovak Language Act non-discriminatory if properly implemented
High Commissioner for National Minorities from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Knut Vollebaek reiterated in Bratislava on Wednesday, September 16, that the amendment to Slovakia's State Language Act does not contravene international standards, and neither endangers nor discriminates against anybody. Speaking at a press conference in the Slovak capital, he said that this did not mean that the law is perfect, but added "it's a law that can be worked with to ensure its proper implementation."
EU-harmonised inflation fell to record low of 0.5 percent in August
Annual inflation in Slovakia measured according to EU methodology dropped from 0.6 percent in July to a record low of 0.5 percent in August, the Slovak Statistics Office reported on September 16.
Constitutional Court to evaluate the constitutionality of the Press Code
The Slovak Constitutional Court (ÚS), led by its chairperson Ivetta Macejková, has decided to examine some provisions of the 2008 Act on Periodical Press and Newswires (also known as the Press Code) based on a motion from a group of Slovak MPs who say that it does not comply with the constitution or the European Convention on Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms.
Survey: Slovaks support Obama
The regular Transatlantic Trends survey conducted by the German Marshall Fund, in which Slovakia has been participating since 2004, has shown that Barack Obama still enjoys immense popularity in Europe.
Mečiar awarded €49,500 in libel case against publisher over damage to his ‘dignity’
The Slovak publishing company Spoločnosť 7 Plus has been ordered to pay €49,500 in personal damages to Vladimír Mečiar, the leader of the junior governing coalition party the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), for an article published in 2004 by a news magazine it owns.
Slovakia's unemployment rate dips in August
The rate of registered unemployment in Slovakia decreased by 0.02 percentage points on a monthly basis as of late August, to 12.05 percent, according to data from the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family.
Slovaks reportedly behind Anglo-French cash machine scam
British newspapers are reporting that a group of UK-based Slovaks fraudulently withdrew a total of over €330,000 from cash machines in France using bank cards issued by Barclays Bank.

The results of a Health Ministry tender for 78 licences for medical-emergency services are set to be cancelled, the Association of Emergency Service Providers (APZZS) claimed on September 15.
