Tightfisted banks are highway barrier
IT NEVER promised to be an easy undertaking, even when Slovakia’s economy was described as a central European ‘tiger’. Now, with the global economic downturn taking its toll on all sectors, the cross-country highway linking Bratislava in the west with Košice, Slovakia’s second city, in the east – a project that politicians have been promising the nation since the early 1990s – is proving devilishly difficult to complete, and promises to extract much more sweat from both the state and the private enterprises involved.

Farmers: situation is worst since 1993
CHAIRMEN of regional agricultural and food chambers meeting on October 20 drew the attention of the Slovak government and parliament to what they say is the farming sector’s most dire economic situation since the establishment of the Slovak Republic in 1993, the SITA newswire reported.

Slovak charter air carrier stops flying on October 22
Slovak air carrier Seagle Air suspended flights from October 22 for lack of money, the airline’s General Manager Peter Hanák informed the ČTK newswire. Seagle Air was used by Slovak and Czech travel agencies on charter flights.

Government raises minimum wage by 4.1 percent as of January
The Government on October 21 approved a proposal to raise the minimum wage by 4.1 percent to €307.70 per month as of January. The Labour Ministry originally planned to increase the existing minimum wage of €295.50 per month by 8.1 percent, as proposed by unions.
