A YOUNG student at the Academy of Fine Arts, Mária Vaculová, felt the urge to help people in disaster-stricken Japan and to express solidarity in some way. Together with the parsonage of the Big Evangelical Church, the platform of Kresťania v meste (Christians in the City) and support from the American and Japanese Embassies, she organised a benefit concert on April 1 in the 2,000-seat Big Evangelical Church that raised almost €5,000 in voluntary contributions.

Smile! Tourists are coming!
THE PREPARATIONS for the upcoming Ice Hockey World Championship have not transformed Bratislava into a shiny European metropolis overnight. But tourism experts still believe that the city can appeal to the foreign guests who are expected to flood the city for two weeks – if only service providers, who have something of a reputation for being grumpy, treat the hockey fans with honesty and a smile.
The documentary is dead: long may it live!

Insurers await EU's Solvency II rules
THE SLOVAK insurance market is carefully watching the unfolding of a new European regulatory framework known as Solvency II. Though its aim is to ensure that insurance and reinsurance policies underwritten by insurance companies are financially sound and can withstand adverse events so that policyholders are protected, some industry experts are concerned that the additional capital requirements may push some popular insurance products out of the market. Since the process of preparing the Solvency II rules is not complete, insurance firms in Slovakia and other EU countries must still wait until final documents are adopted and then implemented to assess what impacts the new regulatory framework, which now has a target implementation date of January 1, 2013, rather than October 31, 2012, might have on the insurance industry.
